Chapter 1 Welcome

A very loud explosion echoed in the house, arousing Marie form her dreams of unicorns in the Dark Forest that her brothers often told her about. Dark grey smoke drifted from the cracks on the door and flowed out the window as usual. Sighing, she slowly got out from her comfortable bed and began to drag herself to the door to great her very loud family. Opening the dark stained door she found her father halfway holding his hand up to his neck. He was a thin man with short shaggy dark blond hair with stunning green eyes. He wore his usual white lab coat that was nearly covered with black soot and dark pants.
A weary smile appeared on his face as he lowered his hand, "Hello Marie, sorry about the explosion, was working on a new potion to help speed up the Hogwarts train."
Marie sighed and shook her head before closing the door, "It's alright, just be careful."
When the door closed she heard her father's voice behind the door, "Thanks, your mother wanted me to tell you that breakfast will be done it twenty minutes so get ready."
"Alright," she walked away from the door and headed to her oak closet to pick her black cloak and her school uniform. Today was the day that she would enter Hogwarts, a school specializing in training young wizards in the art of witchcraft and wizardry, and she was nerves regardless of how she acted in front of her parents. She felt excited that she was going to the best school of magic and received her letter in the beginning of summer but now she was terrified. Marie shook her head to get the fear out of her head and grabbed what she needed, and she took a quick shower and got dress. She looked at herself in the mirror; her dark green eyes glowed even with the dim light. Her light gold brown hair hung to her shoulders wet covering her pale peach skin.
"BREAKFAST!" shouted her mother.
Sighing again, she walked out of the bathroom and headed downstairs to see the total damage that her father had caused. One the right, the kitchen remained intact, clean wood countertops were spotless while there wasn't a single dish in the sink. The cupboards were closed and the table covered with food. The floor was clean with no crumbs, however when you moved to the left you saw that it was badly scorched. The white walls were covered with burns and the lab room where her father worked was blown apart, the door hug limply to the left, cracks decorating the hard oak wood.
"What are standing there for? You should be used to your father's experiments by now." Marie looked towards the right where her mother stood. She was also a thin woman with long light blond hair a deep set of blue eyes. Her apron clean from any messes while her long maroon skirt barely touched the floor and her grass green shirt covered with the apron. Her eyes glowed dangerously, warning her that she needed now or she will sorely regret it.
Sitting down to the last chair in the table she pulled a plate of food in front of her and took her fork. Before her silverware touched the hot eggs a pair of rushing feet ran from the top of the stairs until it reached the table. Her two older brothers, Mike who was in his last year, and Jeff who was working alongside their father, they sat on the table, putting themselves next to their sister. Mike had their mothers light blond hair cut short but their fathers green eyes. He was just as thin as them both and wore his Ravenclaw cloak and uniform.  Jeff had semi-long darker shade of gold that nearly seemed brown and bluish green eyes.  His lab cloak was clean telling them that he had avoided the eruption of their latest failure.
Piling their plates high with food, Mike looked down to see that their sister hadn't touched hers. Leaning his head on hers he smiled, "Avoiding mom's delicious food? Do you have a death wish?"
He felt something hard hit the top of his head, forcing him to pull away from her. Jeff ate innocently, with another fork, and completely ignored him. Mike was the silly one in their family while Jeff was the quiet, but over protective one in the family. Their father was the awkward one, that they were used to, and their mother was the strict and loving mother they will ever know.
Marie grinned at her brother and began to eat in the semi calm peace in the house hold. Halfway through her plate she heard her mother's panic yelps and saw her rushing down the stairs.
"We're late!!!"
Looking to the massive grandfather clock she chuckled softly, they were nearly fifteen minutes late then schedule and had to leave now before the train left. Her brother, Mike, had already finished early and waited patiently near the door, his suitcase ready to leave. Knowing what was going to happen, she stuffed her toast in her mouth before she felt the familiar grip on her collar shirt and was dragged away from the table, her feet dragging along for the short trip to her room to grab her things.

They followed her brothers yells of excitement to going back to school to goof off with the Wesley twins, who were famous for pulling pranks and often joined them, regardless that he was older than them by a year. Her mother, older brother, and father were walking with her down the train stations over crowded docking areas where she saw Mike waving at them frantically.
He shouted, cupping his hands to his face to amplify the sound, "I'm going on ahead! See you on the other side!" He backed up and looked at a solid brick wall. Gripping the handles of his luggage cart, he bolted down into the wall. Instead of hearing a massive crash of metal from the impact, they heard nothing but a quiet swoosh.
Within moments they stood in front of the dreaded wall. She looked up to see the number nine in bold black number. Her body felt tense as she death gripped the handles of her own luggage cart. A warm hand touched hers and she looked back to see her father's warm green eyes. Despite the awkward moments that they had in the family she always knew that her father knew when to step in when either one of them were feeling confused or scared. Unlike their mother that liked to barge in whenever she felt that they were threaten or needed a talk.
Seeing that they were standing with her she took a deep breath and ran into the wall. The feeling of nothing graced her presence, let her know that she had passed through the gate and entered their personal train station. A massive black and red, 4-6-0 steam engine waited patiently in its own railway for the students to get themselves inside its carriers. Soon, the sound of her mother sobbing grabbed her attention away from the train and to her mother's sobs. Her face was turning red and she hid her face behind a light blue handkerchief. Marie let go of her cart and walked to her mother. Tugging on her grass green shirt she got her mother's attention and smiled as best as she could.
"Mom, I'll be fine."
Mother refused to believe so though and grabbed hold of her shoulders to be pulled into a tight hug. "I'm going to miss you baby."
Shifting her head to look up she smiled, "I know mother."
A blaring horn echoed in the train station, alerting the new and old students to climb aboard so that they could head towards the school. When mother finally released Marie from her death grip she waved goodbye and headed to the black and red train. As she walked up the steps she looked back to see her family members waving in tearful emotion as they watched her climb in the train.

Marie continued to look for an empty cart until she reached the final cart. Slowly opening it she saw a boy with black hair reading a book. He had light peach skin covered by a black cloak with the Ravenclaw badge on the left side of his chest. His green eyes continued to scan a school book of magic when he looked up and smiled, "Hello."
Marie blushed and stuttered, "H-Hello."
His smile grew a bit wider, "I'm the only one in the cart; you can join me if you want."
She nodded and quickly walked into the cart, closing the doors behind her. As she tried to reach the top of the shelf above the seat she heard shuffling clothes. A pair of hands reached above her, "Here, let me help."
"T-Thank you!"
He chuckled and placed the bag on the shelf. When he sat down he opened his book, "So, what's your name?"
"Marie Richardson and you?" she asked as she sat in front of him.
Lifting his gaze from the book, "Alex Grove, is this your first year?" Marie nodded quickly and blushed when he chuckled at her movement, "Don't have to be nervous, every things going to be fine. In fact from what I heard this will be an interesting year."
"Really?" she asked as laid against her seat to get comfortable.
Alex nodded, "Yep, I heard that…"
BOOM!!!!
The door dented inside the cart room and smoke spewed from the cracks. Alex sighed as he opened his book and counted down, "Three…Two…"
"ALEX!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP THEIR OUT TO GET ME AGAIN!!!!!!!!."
Sighing he got up and forced the door opened, a clumsy teen fell into the room covered in soot. His bright red hair was spiked in different directions as his light tan skin was painted black but his hazel eyes were bright mischievous. "Alex! How's it going?"
"What did you do this time Cole," he asked in a monotone voice.
"Aw, no needs to be so mean. I just placed a small toy inside the candy trolley, but…"
"It back fired, she was prepared this time."
Cole gave Alex a wide smile, dragging his bags inside he forcibly closed the door and placed his bags next to Alex. Throwing himself next to him his eyes finally met Marie who looked at him with wide confused eyes. "Names Cole Edison, I'm also in Ravenclaw."
She continued to look at him. Alex smirked as stated, "Looks like your stupidity shocked Marie."
Cole glared at Alex who continued to ignore his friend. Smiling once more he looked at Marie, "Sorry for scaring you, guess I tend to hang out with the Wesley twins to long."
Alex scoffed, "No wonder you get dumber every day I see you." Flipping a page he felt Cole lean in the book.
"What cha reading?"
Slapping the book in his face he simply said, "Magic, you should do it sometimes."
Marie smiled and looked out the window, watching the scenery pass by until the sun slowly began to set. They passed forest and meadows, the night light creeping in the horizon covering everything in darkness. In the distance she saw a massive castle sharing a massive lack. Rooms glowed with light as they approach the school.
Cole was sleeping against the window, his face planted on the glass. Alex closed the book and placed it in his bag. However looking over to his friend he sighed and grabbed Cole's bag. Alex threw the bag, aiming at his half exposed face. Sputtering, Cole jumped up and looked around taking his wand out. "What in bloody… ALEX!"
Alex placed Marie's bag in her open arms and looked back at Cole with emotionless eyes, "Get ready to get off."
The train slowly came to a stop as they waited until almost all the students were off the carts. Alex made his way down the hallway and out the door with Marie behind him and a goofy Cole. Marie looked around hesitantly when a massive shadow appeared above her. Looking up she saw a very, VERY tall black bearded man with mop like hair. A thick brown cloak that seemed to be hand stitched together hung loosely, regardless of the fact that this was no skinny man. He easily over towered them all and seemed to be even as tall as the train itself.
She backed up and accidentally back into Cole. Cole patted her head before smiling at the tall man, "Aw Hagrid! You scared poor Marie."
The man, Hagrid, looked down at Marie and gave her a warm smile, "Sorry 'bout that didn't mean ta scare you."
Marie nodded, "No problem."
Alex looked back and nodded, "Hello Hagrid, ready for this year's semester?"
"Yep, as long as you keep Cole in line, as always, then all I have to do is worry about the twins."
Alex nodded, "I'll do my best."
Cole dramatically held his chest and leaned backwards in a slow motion, "Oh, I've been wounded by my best friend!"
"…" Alex glanced back at Cole before sighing. Grabbing Cole's collar cloak he dragged him down to the lack with Marie jogging along. They stood at a peer with a boat waiting for them. Several others were already inside the boat and they carefully got inside. Marie looked back at the tall man before looking at the others.
"Is he a giant?"
Alex shook his head, "He's only half a giant but you don't have to worry, he is very kind and is the gate keeper of the school."
Cole leaned on Alex's shoulder, "Ah yes, Hagrid…one day I'll pull the biggest prank that will outshine even the twins and will be put down in history!"
"You forget." Alex pulled Cole's ear, "I've got to babysit you again this year."
The boat ride continued with Cole talking endlessly about all the plans he had concocted over the summer just for this school year. Alex simply ignored him and talked the other passengers and Marie. Soon they were at the shores and Cole ruffled Marie's hair, "You need to head over to where the other freshmen are gathering. See ya inside squirt."
Marie glared at the cheerful teen that dragged Alex into the group of older years. Sighing, she walked towards the first years and waited patiently for the rest to arrive. In front of them stood a tall woman with already greying hair but stood proudly before them. She wore a pointed dark purple hat and cloak that dragged on the ground. Her sharp eyes stared at the group.
"My name is Professor McGonagall. I will be taking you into the room behind me where the other students are waiting patiently for you to enter. I want you to enter quietly and in an orderly fashion manner and will be placed in your houses." She looked at the group before the doors behind her slowly opened. Turning around gracefully, she walked down an isle between two massively long tables. There were thousands of students already sitting in their tables and staring at the new group. In front of the room was a table facing the other students and teachers, or what she suspected to be teachers, sat and smiled at them.  Professor McGonagall walked ahead of them and stood beside a stool with a worn out brown hat that had tattered strings on the edges of it.
"When I call your name you need to sit here as I place the sorting hat on you head." Names began to fly as they each disappeared into their own homes. Cheered appeared and claps as each freshmen entered their houses. "Marie Richardson." Snapping back to reality she slowly made her way into the stool and sat down. She felt the hats cloth touch her head and it suddenly twitched to life.
"Well, well, what do we have here…another Richardson…but different. A very bright mind between these shoulders along with a hidden talent…better be…."
